Movie Review: CONTAGION

It all started with a cough…

Hypochondriacs do not want to go anywhere near this movie!  Contagion is a medical thriller starring Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon to name a few.

Laurence Fishburne and Kate Winslet star as employees from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) trying to track down the origins of a deadly epidemic that is sweeping across the world.  Matt Damon is the husband of the possible Patient Zero to this disease, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law stars as a whistleblower/blogger/conspiracy theorist that reports on all things dealing with the governments dealings with vaccines.

This movie was very well made and reminds me of the 1993 HBO movie And the Band Played On (another good movie, go rent it).  Let me warn you right now that this is not the feel good movie of the year by far but it is a good story and shows all aspects of humanity during an epidemic.  There are those genuinely trying to help, those that want to cause more problems by spreading lies and those that feel they are above all others and will take what they feel they need to survive.  Fishburne and Winslet (among others) are trying to find a cure for the disease while battling government bureaucracy.  Law believes that the CDC is just out to make money off of this and is not telling the truth about what they know and are keeping the cure for themselves.  Meanwhile, Damon is a father trying to deal with the death of his wife, Paltrow, and son while keeping his daughter safe.

Animal lovers, be warned, some scenes you will not like in this movie.  My wife is a vegetarian for the sake of the animals and there were certain scenes that she had to shield her eyes from.  Scenes of animal testing and the final sequence (which I will not reveal here even with my spoiler alert) are a little hard to take.

There were a couple of items in this movie that I had a problem with, mostly logistical.  One of the scenes has Dr. Erin Mears (Kate Winslet) speaking on the phone with a person that came in contact with Patient Zero (Gwyneth Paltrow) and finds out that he is experiencing symptoms of the disease.  He is riding a city bus and even though the CDC, which Mears works for, already knows the virus is spread by air and contact, she tells him to stop the bus and get off.  HUH?!  Right now everyone on that bus, and the bus as well, has been exposed to the virus and should be quarantined.  But I am falling into one of my pet peeves that I see on other reviewer sites… MOVIES ARE MADE TO ESCAPE REALITY, SHUT UP AND ENJOY IT!

All-in-all this was a very good drama, not Oscar worthy but good none the less.  The style was reminicient of the 1970’s style disaster movies and was a refreshing change to all the 3D movies being released.  This was a movie that relied on its story to carry it rather than special effects.

Later…

Go ahead, make my day.
